The debtor can save his house, after the filing, if the mortgage company offers the debtor a loan modification. In the event of the latter, HUD will be provide a second mortgage that must be paid, in a lump sum, after a sale or refinancing.  The other option requires the debtor to pay back the total amount he is behind with the mortgage, over a sixty month plan.
